I learned pascal while attending North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC , USA.

I used Turbo/Borland pascal on personal machines but the university used SAGE p-systems I think.

Here is an interesting discussion of pascal history. Did not know it was used in development of Apollo operating system Aegis.

Couldn't find it initially, but SAGE systems were used at NCSU to teach pascal.

I found the following site that talks about the SAGE II/IV.

Pascal is one programming language I've never used, and never learned.. It migh tbe interesting, though I haven't seen any recent projects using it.

My college required you to get a passing grade in Pascal before you were allowed to declare your major in Information Compter Systems. We programmed on a Burroughs mainframe, the teacher was a journalism professor.

Was an interesting time... ;)

It's very strictly typedef'd and kinda forces you to break your code into sections.

It's really good for teaching beginning programming concepts.

I took a programming class in high school and was hoping it would be C/C++ or Pascal, but it was BASIC.. They were using Microsoft QBasic on MS-DOS with textbooks from the late 70s.

I liked RPG/RPG II. Than again, I liked COBOL. I always preferred the business side of computing.

I liked both RPG II and COBOL.

RPG though felt a little to structured. It felt like you were filling out forms and then transposing to the computer. I'm guessing it had to do with it being a legacy card punch type language. I remember when I was learning RPG II, RPG III was just coming out and it was going to be more freeform.

COBOL was an interesting language to learn. I should have focused more on it and gotten a coding job instead of security. So many mainframe cobol programmers needed now. :)
