• configuration question

From Marc Lewis@1:396/45 to All on Wed Dec 16 18:52:35 2020
    Hello All.

In the sample for the NODES.CFG the line reads:

    #node 5047/999 hostname;* passwword c

    What does the * signify?

Is there or is there not a space before the password?
The last character, the flavour, if it is a c, does that mean that binkd will crash whatever is in the outbound directory for that node, regardless of the flavour of the .flo file? All mine are .hlo and the actual flavor is set (presently) in my IRex configuration. I am thinking correctly here?

What do I do with the 2 Points I have that do not have an internet address since they don't run a BBS type server? My NODES.CFG line for them looks like this:

    node 1:396/45.27 0.0.0.0; xxxxxxx h
    node 1:396/45.28 0.0.0.0; xxxxxxx h

The only thing I could think of to put for an address was the 0.0.0.0. Is this correct? On that same 2 lines you can see what I was asking about for the password; is that leading space supposed to be there - it doesn't seem right and the one known node whose password I cut-and-pasted from his entry in the IRex configuration was met with:

    -o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-CUT-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-

The only possible reason I can think of it that space in the NODES.CFG file after the semicolon.

    My configuration reads:

    domain fidonet Q:\\fido_out 1

Not sure that that "1" is for. (?)

The tree of that directory looks like this:

    +--Fido_Out
    +--filehold
    +--Out
    +--018C002D.PNT
    +--OUT.002
    +--OUT.003
    +--OUT.004
    +--OUT.005
    +--OUT.006

Will binkd see all the actual outbound directories? Or is there something else that belongs in the outbound directory designation in the binkd.cfg file?

Any help or observations will be appreciated.

    Best regards,
    Marc

    Hello All.

In the sample for the NODES.CFG the line reads:

    #node 5047/999 hostname;* passwword c

    What does the * signify?

One or more non-white-space character (i.e. another hostname). If the you're only associating a single hostname with the node, then there's no semicolon and nothing where the asterisk is.

Is there or is there not a space before the password?

One or more spaces before the password (or '-' when no password is used), yes.

The last character, the flavour, if it is a c, does that mean that binkd will crash whatever is in the outbound directory for that node, regardless of the flavour of the .flo file? All mine are .hlo and the actual flavor is set (presently) in my IRex configuration. I am thinking correctly here?

When I used binkd, I did not specify a flavor. I think it might only be used when a mailbox (outbox) is used, which would have no implicit mode/flavor.

What do I do with the 2 Points I have that do not have an internet address since they don't run a BBS type server? My NODES.CFG line for them looks like this:

    node 1:396/45.27 0.0.0.0; xxxxxxx h
    node 1:396/45.28 0.0.0.0; xxxxxxx h

You can put a '-' for the 'host' field if it's not applicable. This is the help line in (an old) binkd.cfg file:

    #node [[z:]n/]n[.p][@domain] [-nr|-nd] [{hosts|-} [{pwd|-} [flavour [{obox|-} [{ibox|-}]]]]]

That "|-" indicates that a '-' can be used instead of a host (or list of hosts). The semicolon is only used for separating multiple hosts.

The only thing I could think of to put for an address was the 0.0.0.0. Is this correct?

    No.

All this info was gleaned from that single line in the binkd.cfg file, so I'd definitely refer to the binkd docs for detailed and possibly more accurate descriptions.

In the config you can spevify more than one server address. The server address may be an host name, a literal IPv4 address or a literal IPv6 address encased in square brackets.

If more than one server address is specifies, they should be seperated by a semicolon.

    * has a special meaning. It means that the binkp.net method is to be used for determining the hostname. See FTS-5004.

Forget about the flavour. Just leave it out. It only apllies to file boxes.

It does not really matter. It would be more clear to just put a '-' there. Signifying that this node is never called and the line only specifies the password.

    node 1:396/45.27@fidonet - password

    My configuration reads:

    domain fidonet Q:\\fido_out 1

Not sure that that "1" is for. (?)

It is the default zone to be used for Fidonet.

In your case 1, in my case 2.

    Cheers, Michiel

DNS lookup via the default domain, which should be set to binkp.net.

Is there or is there not a space before the password?

    Yes.

You should configure your tosser to set the appropriate flavor for each node.

What do I do with the 2 Points I have that do not have an internet

    node 1:396/45.27 0.0.0.0; xxxxxxx h
    node 1:396/45.28 0.0.0.0; xxxxxxx h

Use a - as a placeholder indicating the node has no hostname or IP address.

Is this correct? On that same 2 lines you can see what I was asking
about for the password; is that leading space supposed to be there -

The semicolon character shouldn't be there unless a node has more than 1 hostname. BinkD is probably interpreting the password as a second hostname for that node, and using the flavor as a password.

    My configuration reads:

    domain fidonet Q:\\fido_out 1

Not sure that that "1" is for. (?)

The 1 indicates the zone for files in your default outbound. With this configuration, files for Zone 2 would be in Q:\fido_out.002.

The tree of that directory looks like this:

    +--Fido_Out
    +--filehold
    +--Out
    +--018C002D.PNT
    +--OUT.002
    +--OUT.003
    +--OUT.004
    +--OUT.005
    +--OUT.006

With it setup like this, you need the following:

    domain fidonet Q:\\Fido_Out\\Out 1

BinkD should see the Out.<zone> directories for the other FidoNet zones, as well as the 018C002D.PNT subdirectory for your points off of 1:396/45.
