• PDP-11 OS expirience

From Andrei Dzedolik@2:463/1331.1 to All on Fri Oct 15 10:26:18 2021
    Greetings, travelers.

I'm building PDP-11 scaled down replica using PiDP-11 kit, which eventually will be able to run multiple OS (emulted by simh) back from the days - from RT-11 to Unix v7 to BSD 2.x.
Does anyone here had real expirience with the PDP-11 machines and can suggest good starting OS?
Any sugggestions are welcome as well as any docs/refrences/etc :)

RSX-11M-PLUS and RSTS are the best "native" OS available on PDPs, IMHO.
Unix was born on a PDP, so I think that V7 can be also a nice choice. :)

I'm running a SIMH PDP11/93 with RSX-11M-PLUS V4.6 with free login on Internet if you want go a walk through.
It runs the TCP/IP stack developed (and still fully maintained) by Johnny Billquist.

Oh, that's nice! I'll give it a try (actially, already did), but guess need to read some manuals first as I couldn't make it beyond 'dir' :^)

Ah, so you won't mind if I bother you time to time when I'll come to running my rig, not just soldering it, would you?

    Cool!

No sorry ... I am too young for experience with the Dec PDPs.

But I would be very interested in your comments.
I was thinking about it, but I have too little attachment to the PDP and it was too costly for me.

I have the KIM Uno and like it very much ;)

Not experience with the real thing, but BSD 2.11 is the most complete Unix experience
you can get from such deployment in my opinion. It has the tools we all know and love.

It makes one think thinks through when you realize tools we use on Linux and modern
BSDs were already in use back then.
