Lb of ground beef is $10 or more.

I sure hope you mean $10/kg! Ground beef was $4 per lb here
pre-Covid, $5 during Covid when meat plant workers were getting sick
and plants were shutting down for 2 weeks or more and re-opening with
better worker spacing but it's $6 today!

Stats Canada says core inflation is 3.5% and food inflation 6.5% but
the items I care about (fresh meat, fruit and vegetables) is easily
up 20%. Frozen and processed foods tend to be flat (so far).

I just bought a whole bunch of frozen vegetables that were on
special ($3.00 for 750 g packages), basically one of everything they
    had.

And of course house prices are up 14% or even more in most markets,
(Oshawa 31%!!!) with lumber prices doubling (but dropping closer to
    normal now).

I'm now soaking some black beans to do something with Sunday.

Roslind is making two pumpkin pies from half of a sugar pumpkin so
layer in the week I plan to make a Caribbean style black bean and
pumpkin soup with the other half.

I'll wing it but probably end up with something like this but with
leftover roast beef and a milder chile.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

Title: Spicy Bean and Salt Beef Stew
Categories: Caribbean, Beans, Beef, Chilies, Stews
    Yield: 4 Servings

    4 c Water
1/2 c Dried black or red beans
1 or 2 Scotch Bonnet chilies
    3/4 lb Salt beef
    1 1/2 c Tomatoes, chop, seed, peel
    1/2 c Chopped onion
    2 cl Garlic, minced
    2 c Pumpkin, cubed
    1/2 ts Ground cumin
    1 tb Chopped fresh thyme

Heat water, beans and chilies to boiling in Dutch oven. Boil
uncovered 2 minutes; remove from heat. Cover and let stand 1 hour.
Remove chilies; reserve. Heat beans to boiling; reduce heat. Simmer
covered for 1 hour. Seed and chop chilies. Refresh the beef in
several changes of water. Cut into 1-inch pieces. Stir meat,
chilies and remaining ingredients except the thyme into the beans.
Heat to boiling; reduce heat. Cover and simmer 30 minutes,
stirring occasionally. Add thyme and simmer about 5 minutes more.

    MMMMM

    Cheers

    Jim

No... It's $10 a pound here. I'll take pictures next time I'm at no frills
    if you want.

...and why anyone would want to live in Oshawa I don't understand. The so called "nice" part of Oshawa has shootings almost every week. The "bad" or Downtown core where I live is filled with homeless people and drug addicts walking in the middle of the street begging for money.

Very nice! I love pumpkin soup.

Cause it's cheaper than Toronto and no worse than Hamilton?

Her half pumpkin made far more than she realised. We ended up with
the two pies, 24 tarts plus a small bowl of pumpkin pudding. We gave
away a pie to her bachelor brother who is housebound and a dozen
tarts to Neekha's half brother, who was doing some yard work for us,
    to take to his family.

I took the other dozen to work where they were very much appreciated.

later in the week I plan to make a Caribbean style black bean
and pumpkin soup with the other half.

    I love pumpkin soup.

Tonight I microwaved my half pumpkin, cut side down, for 10 minutes,
peeled it, chopped it into bite size cubes and combined it with the
precooked black beans, a can of tomatoes, chopped leeks and minced
Chinese leaf celery, The broth was a mixture of chicken gravy, beef
gravy, tomato juice, bean cooking liquid and water seasoned with
cumin, garlic granules and hot sauce. It turned out just fine. I
think I'll throw in a can of corn when I re-heat the leftovers, and
    call it Three Sisters Soup.

    Cheers

I suppose. More shootings then Hamilton too! That's a plus.

That sounds like a good couple of meals.
