• Something Completely Bizzare

You've heard of fried chicken, of course. Then there's chicken fried
steak, which actually doesn't involve chicken at all. (It's delicious,
though!) And surely you've made a fried egg or two in your lifetime. But
did you know...there's more? The plot chickens! ??

INTRODUCING: Chicken. Fried. Eggs. These yolk-filled breakfast bombs
don't actually have any chicken in them. (Or steak, for that matter.)
But they do require a regular egg, all-purpose flour, some seasoning,
and a whole lot of frying oil.

In a recent TikTok video, user @PepperBellyPete demonstrates how to cook
a chicken fried egg at home. First, he cracks a raw egg into a large
skillet filled with sizzling hot oil. It kind of looks like the way
you'd make a poached egg-except in this case, he's using grease instead
of water. Next, @PepperBellyPete removes the egg from the skillet and
gently rolls it in a bed of seasoned flour. (Notice the yolk doesn't
crack. That takes talent!) Finally, he drops the flour-covered egg back
into the hot oil and lets it cook there until it becomes crispy.

At this point in the journey, the finished product really does look like
fried chicken. But then, @PepperBellyPete breaks it apart to show off
nothing but a perfectly fried egg underneath a layer of golden-brown
goodness. Even though we watched the video from start to finish, this
big reveal still somehow surprised us.

As you could imagine, the chicken fried egg recipe earned some, dare we
say, scrambled reactions. Some people thought it was "brilliant" while
other folks couldn't help but point out the health concerns. We think
one TikTok user summed it up best: "Would I eat this? Yes. Would I
regret it? Yes. Would I repeat? Yes."

Regardless of how you feel about it, the real star of this video was not
the chicken fried egg. No, dear friends, all accolades must go to the
mini hot sauce bracelet and its wearer, @PepperBellyPete. (Re-watch the
end if you missed it!) Anyone who keeps a collection of hot sauce
strapped to their wrist is someone we can trust in the kitchen. End of
    story.

    Title: Chicken Fried Egg
    Categories: Eggs, Breads, Herbs
    Yield: 1 serving

    2 lg Eggs; divided use
    2 c A-P flour
    1/2 c Panko breadcrumbs; fine
    - ground
    1 tb Sweet paprika
    1 ts Smoked paprika
    1/2 ts Black pepper
    Salt
    Oil; for frying

FOR THE CHICKEN FRIED EGG: Place 1 egg in boiling water
and boil for 5 minutes. Immediately transfer to ice
water. After egg is chilled, remove the shell, taking
care not to break the cooked white and release the runny
    yolk.

    Heat oil to 350ºF/175ºC.

Mix 1 cup of flour with the other dry ingredients and
    set aside.

Add remaining cup of flour to a separate bowl.

In yet another bowl, beat 1 egg with a splash of water.
Coat the cooked egg in plain flour, then transfer to egg
wash. Shake off any excess wash and roll egg in seasoned
flour. Shake again and return to egg wash, then back to
seasoned flour. Fry until breading is golden brown and
crispy, about 2 minutes. Yolk should still be runny.

    Texas.
