Quoting Denis Mosko to Jim Weller <=-
What is "Desi"?
A person living in or originally from the Indian sub-continent
but living elsewhere, specifically India, Pakistan or Bangladesh.
Our small town has so few South Asians here that they always
include the people from Nepal, Sri Lanka and Mauritius in their
parties too! A lot of the people here who identify as Desi are
actually from Toronto, England or Trinidad but their parents or
grandparents are from one of those three countries I just listed.
