Explanation: Starting Thursday, there may be an amazing new robotic
explorer on Mars. Or there may be a new pile of junk.

This event on FEB 18 ought to be interesting.

I would bet that something will go wrong.

But if the landing succeeds.. looking at the robotic machine, I would bet that its myriad of gears and moving parts would quickly disintegrate due to the fine Martian soil flying around.

Yes, there are so many things that have to work just right.

I find it a bit ironic that the YT video for the simulated entry and landing runs 5 minutes, but the actual event is "7 minutes" of terror. <g>

I haven't read much of the other material about the mission, but do they announce just how long they expect the robot to function on the planet?

Yes, I guess they were just trying to give us a taste of what's happening.. :)

I haven't read much of the other material about the mission, but do they announce just how long they expect the robot to function on the planet?

It must have cost a fortune to put that all together so I think they are hoping it will last as long as possible. I hope all that dust doesn't gum up the works to quickly.

I forgot about Curiosity. A similar vehicle. Apparently it's still moving - albiet very slowly. Apparently it's still functional, and moved about 24km in 10 years.

I was too preoccupied with life-matters of my own to care about a Mars mission in 2011.

I'll probably tune in to await the landing news of Perseverance, but then that will be about it.
