Yes.. I was pulling in a handful of echoes from your nntp feed a while ago. Thank you SO MUCH for that, btw.

BUT.. sadly, the ng pointers kept messing up. A reset/renumber on my end (in Thunderbird) was not helping. Maybe it was a shortcoming in the TB version that I still prefer to use. The pointer problem started affecting some of the other ngs I was reading from your feed too. So, I decided to try another feed - thus, Tommi's system from Finland which I gleened from the list of JamNNTPd servers in the fidonews newsletter.

Everything looked good from Tommi's feed, BUT there was no FIDOGAZETTE echo as ng available. I thought that my access to the echo would not be possible and I started to resign to that reality. Just lurking in it would have been satisfactory.

https://fidonet.ozzmosis.com/is a fine solution, but there is no FIDOGAZETTE.

MEANWHILE, with other interests in mind, I ventured onto WinPoint. Tommiset me all up to talk to his system. An areafix request listed FIDOGAZETTE, ..and here I am. And, the other ngs/nntp/echoes behave very nicely from his system for my occassional fallback with Thunderbird too.

I really really appreaciated the nntp feed from you, but the pointer problem (even after the reset/renumber) was not pulling in the most recent posts anymore. I even cleared all remnants of the files that TB uses for storing particular ngs. But each time I reconnected and re-subscribed to fidogazette, the problem persisted.

If you scroll to the bottom of the echolist, you see "Echolist last updated: 2016-06-29 02:53:23 UTC"

Yes.. Thank you. I am familiar with that. Have been there in the recent past.

I have been away from the fidonet/bbs culture for many years. Just dropping by
to see what's up. Good work with the gazette (as the alternative fidonews). The recipes have not been my interest, but the regular echo stats are pretty good; I believe I had a hand in planting a seed to create that many years ago.

The regular sections for bbs software, and bbs guides are great. I came across
another bbs guide quite by accident recently: http://bbs.guide (yep.. it really has a .guide extension.) Might be good to add that one?

I am totally impressed how these online web-based bbs guides such as telnetbbsguide.com and the one I just mentioned above operate. They make finding bbses so interesting. It is fun to get a preview and read a summary with details, or even jump right in and visit one.

On the matter of the newsletters, it would be cool if they would be searchable (as a database). I was contemplating such a project myself. But I seem to remember that someone had already done that many years ago. Not sure how to find out anymore.

I go to the IFDC site to get the Gazette and FIDONews...so I can have
them on the BBS. Stormy weather here lately (it's tornado season) has
kept the BBS offline more than usual...and the peak of the season isn't
until May.

BBS presentation has come a long way since I last looked at it in 2003 or so.

When I was hunting for the fidogazette echo, one of the first google results was digitaldistortionbbs.com (with the broken fidogazette page). I had no idea
there might be other Synchronet bbses like yours with the same web interface.

That's a planned feature, but nobody else has asked for it that I can recall, so I haven't gotten to it. Should be easy enough to do poorly for starters.

Depends on how the sysop has things set up. If a given message area is accessible to guests / anonymous users, then no account is required (for reading anyway). Maybe there's some conversion to registered users when people want to post.

There are quite a few out there using that web interface now, though I'm not sure how many. It's my own creation, but it's available to any Synchronet sysop running a fairly recent version of the software.

In a word, lightning. I am a 2 time lightning strike survivor (at 3
and 16)...they were indirect, but I still got a severe shock, and have
nervous system damage as a result. I've also been under 2 tornadic
funnel clouds, within a mile of an F-1 and an F-4 rain wrapped tornado,
and nearly drowned in a flash flood on the local college campus 40 years
ago.

As for lightning, each bolt is 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit (5 times
hotter than the surface of the sun), with 3 million volts and 300,000
amps of electricity, it can be 5 miles long, and strike from 20 to 200
miles from the parent thunderstorm.

A fellow ham radio operator had spared no expense for lightning protection...you name it, he bought it, and installed it. He took a
direct, or very close lightning hit. The resulting strike VAPORIZED his
tower, antenna, mast, and coaxial cable...there wasn't a trace left!!

Inside, the towers of the computers and the UPS surge protection
units were black as night, with the circuit boards melted together...and
he had scorch marks down the walls. And, this was even with extensive grounding!!

In short, NO AMOUNT OF SURGE PROTECTION is going to save your system
from a direct or very close lightning strike. I'd rather be offline for
a few hours or days, rather than permanently. Behind Florida, Arkansas
is the most in the country with lightning strikes.

Plus, as hot as lightning is, it can set structures on fire, and burn
them to the ground (it did that to a big church in North Little Rock a
few years ago). And, I saw where it struck a wooden power pole near Chicago...the pole was blasted into splinters!!

Right now you can use the search on the main page at filegate.net/search though.. it's not specific to fidogazette issues, just the whole of filegate.net/index.html

At the moment I'm having freefind update their db for my site so that should help. After they are done (probably sometime this evening) I'll try a search for a particular issue of the 'gazette... and if that brings no joy, I'll ask you for the perl code you use on the FTSC web site. I do use CGI on my site so
your code should work (I think <grin>).

Nah... not into games really... I've just finished the first book of the series: "Shadow Hunter (Rosie O'Orady's Paranormal Bar and Grill Book 1)" by BR Kingsolver. Now I have to wait for her to write the next in the series :( :(
