• bbsfiles.com is no more

From Daryl Stout@1:2320/33 to All on Thu Dec 2 21:51:07 2021
    Janis,

I just saw a note from digital man (aka Rob Swindell), the author
of Synchronet...noting that the bbsfiles.com website, that was done
by Doug Rhea, is no more. Doug lost his valiant battle with cancer
recently, so any of the doorgames that noted they could be registered
at bbsfiles.com, that statement is no longer valid.

Doug had bought many former software collections from authors who
got out of the doorgame business, as it were, and had it set where
one could get a FREE COPY key for use for a year...but one could get
a personal registration key in most of the doors for as little as $5,
which in many cases, was a fraction of what the door originally cost.

Some folks "had problems" with what Doug did, but I personally never experienced any issues. Many of the doors that were on his system, I
was able to download, and register for my BBS's use. The files are still
on my BBS, but as noted, any references to registering them on the
bbsfiles.com website, are no longer valid.

Condolences to Doug's family on this loss. I personally lost my Dad
to pancreatic cancer...an uncle to colon cancer (which I think is what
Doug had)...my Dad's sister to pancreatic cancer...and my grandmother
on my Mom's side to lung cancer. I doubt any family has escaped this
    horrible scourge.

    Hi Daryl,

Condolences to Doug's family on this loss.

    Yes, how sad.

    I personally lost my Dad
    to pancreatic cancer

Very sad. My eldest sister died of that one, Dad died of lung cancer, Mom died of about seven or eight various cancers... my 2nd oldest had thyroid cancer but survived thank goodness. Cancer is nasty business, for sure. One of the meds I take supposedly prevents it, but who knows really.

    Take care,

I don't know how much money I saved by registering the doors through him. It's a shame that so many of what he had are now no longer registerable.

I saw a story on Fox News this morning that pharmacies are having a hard
time getting prescription drugs with these "supply chain issues". While I
take several medicines, I'm not in critical status with any of these right
now. There are a couple that I have PLENTY of...so they'll last awhile. And,
it helps having a good prescription drug plan.

Fox News' editorial cartoon noted "Big Pharma Cash Cow", with a green and white heifer, and its udder was full of protruding Covid-19 syringes instead
of nipples. While I personally have had both initial shots, and the booster (all Pfizer), I was lucky that the only bad thing I got from it was a sore
left arm. However, I don't know if my atrial fibrillation was caused by the shots (the first 2 were in April, the booster was in October), or drinking
all that diet green tea citrus...my heart rate shot up to 155 twice, and I ended up being ambulatory to the ER, and hospitalized both times.

It's sad to hear that. My condolences to his family!
I've also lost some family members to cancer and my wife's dad has
also been diagnosed with cancer and it's unsure how much time he has
    left...

so any of the doorgames that noted they could be registered

I don't want to sound unsympathetic, but is there a chance that this
archive and the keygens he collected, can be saved somehow and passed
to someone else from the scene or to archive.org or sth. like that?

I have many of the files that were on his site, but I don't have the registration key generators. But, I wouldn't have had the funds to purchase them.

I guess many of the files can be found either elsewhere or via
    archive.org.

but I don't have the registration key generators.

    That's the real problem here.

But, I wouldn't have had the funds to purchase them.

And that's the question: Who has/owns them now and is it possible to
forward them or buy them from someone? And what would be the price?
Could this price be paid by someone who continues to sell
registrations or could it be some kind of "crowdfunding"?

    Anna,

The files are fine, but without the registration key generators, the
    programs are worthless.

I have no idea. Doug had all of them, and with the site now gone, I
haven't seen any information on it...and I'd be very surprised if they
    were still available.

Maybe someone from his country (USA?) could reach out to his family

Or did anyone here in FidoNet know him and/or his family?
