Sorry for the long delay, could not answer earlier.

An echo tag cannot be longer than 60 bytes.

Thanks so 60 characters including spaces - is that right?

Spaces in echotag? I don't think so. :)

No, 60 or less ASCII characters with decimal code >=33 and <=126. So tab, space, carriage return and new line are not allowed.

No, 60 or less ASCII characters with decimal code >=33 and <=126. So tab, space, carriage return and new line are not allowed.

I wonder what official maximum length of an area/echo tag (a.k.a. conference id) actually is.

    From echobase.hlp:
Tagname (TAG) - The echo's areatag. May be up to 35
    characters in length.
Title (TITL) - A short description title that briefly
describes the echo. This may be 55
    characters in length.

If anyone has a more official reference, I'd be curious to read it. Thanks,

Depends what you mean with "official". There is FSC-0074:

CONFERENCE is the name of the conference. The
conference name is composed of ASCII characters in
the range 33 to 96 and 123 to 126. The conference
name shall be no more than 60 characters in length.

I assume this maximum length was chosen because of the standard 80 character width of the terminal. I don't interpret it as a hard limit, but I don't see the need for longer names (not sure if there are newsgroups that have longer names)

A good reason for NOT exceeding this limit is that if you try and make it larger a lot of bbs and other software may well produce odd results.

The maximum echotag lenght in GEcho is 50. As well as in Fastecho. So that has been some de facto standard back then.

That's OK. HPT is fully compatible since it allows such echotags.

Could a provision be made to optionally extend this length further if someone using HPT wanted to run longer tag lengths?

For interoperability with other software (e.g. SBBSecho), I would recommend keeping echo/area-tags at 35 characters or less.

I don't think this is a good idea, because if some sysops increase the maximum areatag length for some echo while others do not, the latter will not be able to receive the echo.

That would be a bad idea as it would possibly break mail flow for those using older software that wouldn't support it.

Because hpt is open source you could modifiy it by your own. I don't see the reason why someone would do that. A short echotag gives more space for the description.

That was my first thought too. If the limit of 50 for older tossers is true then hpt should be limited to 50 too. But on the other hand if the FSC limit is 60 then it should be 60. But that is a fidonet limit then. Hpt is not an fidonet only tosser and other othernetwork may allow longer echotags.
