A better equivalent in Latvian for "offhand" might be "no rokas" or "uz vietas" in the original context. But in other context, "improviz?ts" might work.

BTW.. since this message would go through Stas' system, my Latvian chars above may not translate. I will confirm with my nntp connection later where Thunderbird seems to handle utf-8 automatically.

    Hey August!

    Looks good on Telegram!

That is only a start since I can see by your quote that the utf-8 characters got grunged. That is the same with golded and msged as they both display properly but cannot reproduce utf-8 characters. Even an old DOS editor can reproduce utf-8 characters it just cannot display them properly seeing they know nothing about multibyte characters.

BTW.. since this message would go through Stas' system, my
Latvian chars above may not translate.

Note that I am not quoting them back as they are defective and I opt out putting 8-bit characters into a utf-8 msg. That is why my packer calls up iconv to convert utf-8 charaters to whatever 8-bit character set so that only the packed msg has the targeted encoding and the original msg is unscathed as I can verify by looking down at the utf-8 Old English tagline. However in this case iconv isn't part of the equation as far as these particular exchages are concerned.

I will confirm with my nntp connection later where Thunderbird
    seems to handle utf-8 automatically.

I don't use thunderbird myself but I'd be willing to bet it has absolutely no problem with utf-8 characters, including the Latvian ones.

I had to escape the exclaimation mark at the end. How accurate was this result?

It's too literal. The meaning of "baltu" should not be "white". The sentiment is more to wish "bright" days.

"Happy Happiness" is completely weird. The sentiment is to wish that the aforementioned "bright days" provide "lots of good luck" or "fortune".

The meaning of the whole thing should be something like:

"May many bright days of fortune be granted in your life."

Nevertheless, I like the convenience you have looking up the translation from the command-line. Maybe you can build a TRANSFIX akin to how ALLFIX works, and provide a translation report back to an echo! :D

    @CHRS: CP866 2

That's better but it didn't really matter as shown below.

    ... 㦮 ᢮ ⠢ 室.

    Looks fine with TB.

It also quoted back perfectly. Whoever created those characters obviously knows what he is talking about. :::evil grin:::

    Hm. That is really weird because your quote from me shows;

    ... 㦮 ᢮ ⠢ 室.
Don't go to another monastery with your own rules

Which are obviously cp866. It isn't possible for the cp437
    codepage to display russian characters.

Yes.. I know that. But it's cool to know that OpenXP doesn't
necessarily grunge then up to the point where they can't be
decoded after a reply using cp437.

support russian and english chars simultaneously).

I can throw in latvian to the above and have them all in
the same msg simultaneously ... and a few more while we're
    at it.

Understood. utf-8 would be the ticket for that. But then, it
still remains for utf-8 to be supported in OpenXP which is not
    likely to happen.

    Don't worry about the Latvian.

I wasn't worried but just being complete. There is no good
reason latvian and others can't be supported by having the
right tools at hand. I believe we have proved that.

For Latvian, I just have to stick with TB or Telegram. It ain't
gonna work in OpenXP unless I can get utf-8 support *and* a
Windows console font that works with that.

As for your CHRS kludge I think it stands as further
evidence how lame the CHRS kludge actually is. I don't
    think it is a keeper.

Yes.. in your CP866 message to me and my CP437 quoted reply to
you, that may be the case. But atleast OpenXP did not butcher
the "original" to the point that you couldn't read the quoted
Russian chars back to you. THAT is not so lame. ;)
