virtual, but you can use it around the world 'public' or you can
make a private 20 character code and share that code with your
friends and use it as a PTT walkie talkie for a group - that's
kinda cool!

So is there an actual HF type SDR that I can use online without
an actual, physical radio? Like echonet, I guess...

Glad to help. I was chatting on D-Rats last night with KC5FZG (he
apparently doesn't have a mic at his computer, so that's how he checks
into nets), and I told him about the BBS. He has snagged a lot of files
out of my D-Rats Shared Folder...which is fine with me. I even have one
in there as an information file on the BBS. Nothing like a shameless
plug for your BBS...especially when ham radio and weather are the main
themes. :)

Not offhand. The only thing I know about an apple is that it's hard to
eat with dentures, unless you use an apple coring device, where you can
eat it in slivers. <G>

Here I go...talking about food again...but, as I note on the D-Star
Food Net that I run, "H.A.M. stands for H)ave A)nother M)eal"...and "You
don't call us 'Late For Dinner'" (hi hi). Besides, with Field Day just
over 2 months away, and getting into the heart of hamfest season, you
have to keep the visitors and the operators well fed. And, yes, if you
eat ham, you are cannibalistic (hi hi).

I don't have any games on my smartphone. I use it to check email and
weather data. I switched my main browser from Google Chrome to Mozilla
Firefox. I've been pleasantly surprised with it, and wondered why I
waited so long to do it. But, I've done that in the past, including:

1) Buying a TNC at the Memphis, Tennessee hamfest 20 years ago, when it
was at the fairgrounds...to use on packet. But, it sat in my closet for
2 years.

2) Upgrading from Windows 98 to XP -- then finally from Windows 7. With
Windows 7 security updates and support ending in January, 2020,
Microsoft is trying to get the holdouts to upgrade to Windows 10. Right
now, I can't afford to do so...even off of Amazon. $200 per copy, and
needing 1 for each computer, makes a rather steep proposition...I could
buy a nice rig for that.

3) Not getting into D-Star and D-Rats when I first had the chance to do
so. The latter allows you to chat, exchange messages, and transfer
files, in real time. Some nets meet in "chat rooms" (you can also set up
a "private chat" with another ham), and the conversation gets busy.

4) Changing from Google Chrome to Mozilla Firefox. Google has taken
forever and a day to load, and Firefox works much faster.

I used to use Facebook and Messenger on my phone, but don't anymore.
I've gotten so where I use an add-on called "Fluff Busting Purity". It
filters out all the ads, group suggestions, and other "garbage" that you
may not want to see, as you browse Facebook. Right now, I only get on
there to:

A) Upload the "Net Menu" of D-Star, D-Rats, and Echolink Nets (with
links to CQ100, D-Star HF, and DMR Nets) to the D-Star Users, D-Star
Nets, and DMR Nets groups.

B) Take checkins for the Arklatex D-Star Net in its respective
group...I'll soon do the same with the QCWA group and its D-Star Net,
once it moves to the QuadNet array on May 5.

C) Post the link to the "Rail Passengers Association" News Hotline to
the D-Star Trains Net, and the Railfans R Us groups.

I was spending too much time on there, although I did obtain a bunch
of graphical files for areas on the BBS.

Yeah, like that I guess...

Not sure. The only times I get on Echolink are to check into The
Millennium Net, the Handi-Hams Midday Net, and the Skywarn Hurricane
Prep Net. There was a utility called EchoAnswer, but it doesn't work
right under Windows 7...it was a Virtual Answering Machine for Echolink.
I also had EchoTime, a shareware product, basically the forerunner of
the freeware program EchoProducer. Neither of those are registerable
anymore.

The Millennium Net originally start on both 6 meters and on Echolink.
But, after the passing of one of the nets founders 2 years ago, the net
went to Echolink only. We still get a nice group of folks chatting in a roundtable format each week (the only time the node for it is up), and
they gave me the idea for an Echolink Nets Page 12 years ago. I've
expanded that to include D-Star and D-Rats Nets...but also provide links
to a "Nets Menu" with this information, plus links to CQ100, D-Star,
DMR, and D-Star HF Nets. I've done very little with DMR, and spend most
of my time with D-Star and D-Rats.

No, but for some new hams, "mic fright" is a very real threat. Also,
for those hams who've had to move to an assisted living center,
nursing home, or into an HOA, with CC&R's, it still lets one enjoy the
ham radio hobby, without all the gear. Unlike regular HF, where you have
to have a Technician Class license, to use "a sliver" of 80, 40, 15, and
10 meters" for CW only...and another sliver of 10 meters for SSB...but
have to be a General or higher to get far more...CQ100 allows Novice
Class hams and up to use it. I've even done PSK31 with it.

There is a yearly fee (currently $39), but paid subscribers can use
the service for free on Sunday, and they get an add-on called QSO-TV --
sort of like a VoIP version of Amateur Television. While I've seen some
"wild pictures" on there, one ham in Canada just constructed band pass
filters for 2 meters and 6 meters, and he sent an image of the circuit
board, as well as the box it was in. Folks also "checkin to the net" via
that addon.

I do the QCWA (Quarter Century Wireless Association) CQ100 Net on
Friday mornings at 10am Central Time, and it's on the same frequency as
their 20 meter HF net, which is at 2000 UTC on Sunday. But, lately, HF propagation has been in the toilet, as it were. I also do the QCWA
D-Star Net at 4pm Central Time on Sunday, on Reflector 26A...but
starting May 5, it'll move to the QuadNet Array (I'll be on X-Reflector
757A), where we can also pick up DMR, WIRES, and System Fusion users. Go
to www.openquad.net for details.

As for QCWA itself, if one has been licensed at least 25 years (for
2019, it's ANY TIME in 1994 or earlier), and is currently licensed, they
can join the organization. Details are at www.qcwa.org -- I'm a member
of the national organization, and the Arklatex Chapter.

Speaking of money, that's why I never did anything with D-Star. For what
it would cost to get into I could buy other stuff that I like or need. :-)
I collect comics so I have a small budget for that every month, plus I
play the Star Wars X-Wing miniatures game. I don't spend a ton with it,
but I do spend some, plus some gas to drive for tourneys and such...

On your phone? I use Safari on laptop as well as phone, but I do
use Chrome for Google based stuff at work. We are a Google Apps for

Yeah, that makes sense! I guess it's like us using the echonets to 'talk'
when we could email directly. I'm not dialing up, but I am 'connecting'
to a BBS with software, etc. And I'm using an offline mail reader, though
time on the BBS is no longer limited like in the old days. :-)

While I've seen some "wild pictures" on there, one ham in Canada just constructed band pass filters for 2 meters and 6 meters, and he sent an image of the circuit board, as well as the box it was in. Folks also "checkin to the net"
via that addon.

Windows Only part of it, but I do have the capacity to run Windows on
my Mac via Parallels. I used to have to do it a LOT for work, but as
time has gone on we've managed to move more and more away from "windows
only" things...

I do the QCWA (Quarter Century Wireless Association) CQ100 Net on
Friday mornings at 10am Central Time, and it's on the same frequency as their 20 meter HF net, which is at 2000 UTC on Sunday. But, lately, HF propagation has been in the toilet, as it were. I also do the QCWA
D-Star Net at 4pm Central Time on Sunday, on Reflector 26A...but
starting May 5, it'll move to the QuadNet Array (I'll be on X-Reflector 757A), where we can also pick up DMR, WIRES, and System Fusion users.

Terminal Node Controller. It's basically "a modem for ham radio", used
in applications like packet and APRS.

Speaking of APRS, I have a QST set up with D-Rats to send out my GPS
location at the bottom of every hour...so, I'm visible on aprs.fi (just
look for WX4QZ in Little Rock, Arkansas).

I thought Win10 was a free upgrade from 7? I know for a while there it JA>would force itself? Was that a period of free or something?

They did that initially, but I think that offer has long since

You can get a ThumbDV from Northwest Digital Radio for under $150.
That's cheaper than a DV Dongle ($200) or a basic DT-Star HT (well over

Plus, at times, I got ads for feminine hygiene products. Being a

I never got into podcasts. To me, a podcast is plaster on a container

Amazing how many have such weak passwords. Bots have tried to get into
the BBS, but with the recent addition of a CAPTCHA routine, they never
get there. Before that, Synchronet had a deal where if they logged on

At some workplaces, that's the only time to make a phone call. I've
been disabled for 15 years now, and unless I'm at a doctors appointment,
in the ER, or in the hospital, my phone is on 24/7.

If I could get into some good financial benefit this year, I'd like to
take one final Amtrak trip to the Duke City Hamfest in Albuquerque in September. But, if I can't do that, the 2020 National Square Dance
Convention will be in Spokane, Washington, and that'd be a really nice
trip. Of course, I'd do Sleeping Car most of the way...the 2 exceptions
would be on the Missouri River Runner between Saint Louis and Kansas
City...and on the Lincoln Service between Chicago and Saint Louis. I'd
rather spend the night in Saint Louis on the way back, than in Chicago.

By going to Spokane, I'd likely square dance Thursday and Friday, and
just spend Saturday with the local hams. I've "planned and dreamed" both
trips, but wiithout the funds to pay for the tickets, both are "out of
the question". However, one can't book a train trip until 11 months
in advance of departure. So, if it ends up being the Spokane trip, it'd
be late July before I could book it. Either way, I'd like to work Amtrak
D-Star Railroad Mobile from the train.

But, with all the stress I've gone through in the last year, with
having to get my Mom into a nursing home, cashing in all the stocks,
life insurance deals, etc., I've been on the verge of a nervous
breakdown...and I feel that I DESERVE A NICE TRIP AS COMPENSATION. My
brother wanted NOTHING to do with the financial crap...he can barely
balance his own checkbook...but he wants his money. He always lived for himself, and in the present...so I'll have to pay for his funeral after
he dies, as he didn't pre-arrange...like myself, my Mom, and my late
father, did.

Correct. As noted, The Hoosier State will be terminated on July 1 (the
state of Indiana is refusing to subsidize that corridor train), but The Cardinal will still serve the route between Chicago and Indianapolis
(and on to Washington, DC) 3 days a week in each direction. Contact
Amtrak at 1-800-872-7245 (1-800-USA-RAIL) or go to www.amtrak.com for
details.

While coach is cheaper, you don't have your privacy that you do in a
sleeping car. Plus, except for the Silver Star Route, your meals in the
Dining Car (excluding appetizers and alcoholic beverages) are included

With the APRS mode (available for Technician Class licensees and
higher), with such things as a beacon from ones Terminal Node Controller (TNC)(a modem for ham radio)...or from their mobile rig...or from the
APRS app for Android, or a GPS-X command with the D-Rats program, one
can have their location out on aprs.fi around the clock. If I'm offline
for storms (as I will be tonight through Thursday night), I won't show
up.

I have the APRS for Android app, but mainly have mine from the D-Rats utility. RATS is STAR spelled backwards...so it's a companion to D-Star.
It allows hams to exchange message and files, and chat in real time.
Some nets have chat rooms, or are on "ratflectors" (as opposed to
reflectors on voice), and they can get rather busy. :)

Yes, mine had those, too. :) I enjoyed turning it on just to practice. I MP>was in Cub Scouts back then, and they still taught some Morse Code back MP>then.

There are 2 funny stories I've heard over the years about Morse Code.

1) I asked one area ham (who passed away several years ago), what his
secret to learning Morse Code was. He replied "I learned all the dirty
words first!!" <G>. Laughing, I said "Well, you can't say them on the
air...but if it helps, more power to you!!". Sure enough, I was
monitoring a conference server on the mode of Echolink, and this one
club was doing a Morse Code class over the repeater. The first 4 letters
they taught were the "S expletive". I thought "I'll be d@mned!!". :P
But, when you looked at the dot and dash pattern (as ... .... .. - ), it
made perfect sense.

2) Four old boys were sitting at a restaurant table in Annapolis,
Maryland, telling each other dirty jokes in CW (Continuous Wave, another
name for Morse Code). This drop dead gorgerous, curvaceous, sexy female
walked up to them, and admonished "You boys need to watch your
language!! I teach CW at the Naval Academy across the street!!" and
walked out!! They were as red as tomatoes!! <BG>

I personally can send great, but lock up trying to receive.

I forgot about that! I was in the cub scouts too, and I learned

You don't have time to do that. Speaking of ogling (dirty old hams
need love, too <G>)...several years ago, we were providing
communications for the Susan G. Komen Race For The Cure Run for breast
cancer research. I was to be Net Control, and they were razzing me, that
"I was going downtown to oogle at all the good looking women"...and, admittedly, there were a lot of them!! ;)

But, the "fun" stopped, when we got a report of "a woman getting
trampled". I thought "How are we going to get her out of there??", as
there were at least 40,000 runners, etc. downtown. It turned out that
she was claustrophobic!! I wondered "What in the world is a
claustrophobic person doing in the middle of an event like this??!!".

We had a heck of a time getting an ambulance to her...and I understand
she had to be hospitalized for a bit. They quit using the hams for communications several years ago.

Let's hope for a healthy baby... THEM. :-)

Portage County Amateur Radio Service (PCARS) Club in Ravenna, Ohio. It
showed "A Homemade Raspberry Pi FT8" -- but it was a literal raspberry
pie!! So, I found an image of a pineapple upside down cheesecake from
The Cheesecake Factory, and titled it "My alternative to a Raspberry
Pi". :P
