It's pretty bad when the first thing one looks at in QST (if they're
an ARRL member) is the Silent Keys column (the list of hams who have
    died).

When I changed callsigns before this one, when I told one ham that
(callsign) would be no more, he thought I was hinting at suicide. But,
with the new callsign, the old one is no longer valid.

Unfortunate, but I'm afraid it's the price we all pay eventually... Doesn't make it any easier to take, though.

    I didn't know you were a ham?

Wish I were. Been around them all my life and miss quite a few of them that have left our earthly domain now.

Short story: Back in the 50's we lived in the Naval Housing Project in San Juan, PR. There were at least a half-dozen hams in the project. There was one
that lived across the street who had a what seems to be enormous CW rig in the front room; I was always fascinated at going over and watching. I remember he was a "speed demon" on the key and could de-code just as fast as he was in Naval Communicaitons. The old rig he used had big finals behind a screened enclosure and gasseous regulator tubes that had that errie purple glow to them (probably like 0D3's or 0C3's). Fred Hatfield if I recall correctly... no telling what his callsign was; that was 60+ years ago.

    Hi, Marc...

And may your SK be decades away I pray.

Same here...but "tomorrow is promised to no one".

This one moved me tremendously since we were such close friends. It really ML>hurts. ;-/

    I didn't get married until I was 43, but never dreamed I'd be a
widower at 47. Saturday is the 12th anniversary of my wife's death.

    Be well my friend.

I go in for an ultrasound on Wednesday, to see if I'm pregnant ... ...
... ... ... with "Sly And The Family Stone". <G>

Then, I go in for another Low-T treatment 2 weeks later...inserted in
the butt cheek. Talk about a real PITA. :P

    Marc,

    If I had a license...

It's not as difficult as it once was to become a ham. You no longer
need to know Morse Code, and all you need to do is pass a 35 question
multiple choice exam on rules, regulations, frequencies, propagation,
and basic electronic theory. The questions are taken from a pool in the
public domain that you can download from www.ncvec.org -- however, the
method I highly recommend is HamTestOnline (hamradiolicenseexam.com).

A 6 month subscription gets you both the questions and the concepts
(I think it's $24.95 for the Technician course). This way, you learn
something, and are not just memorizing answers. It is all web browser based...you can do it on dial-up, DSL, or broadband...with nothing to
    download or install.

You study in the privacy of your home at your own pace...although I
don't recommend more than 2 hours a day total, or you'll burn out. When
you get to 80% studying, start taking practice tests. When you start
scoring 85% or better consistently, then you're ready for the exam.

But, after adequate study and practice tests, if you still fail the
exam, send them proof of the failure (the examiners can give you a CSCE
with NONE as "what license was earned")...and they will cancel your subscription, and refund your money.

So, you either get your license, or your money back...you can't lose!!
I studied 2 hours a day for a month...going from Technician to General
in 14 days, and General to Amateur Extra 13 days later. It was THE BEST
MONEY I EVER SPENT in ham radio. And, all you need to get on the air is
    the Technician Class license.

Now, while I'm an Amateur Extra Class licensee, I had to become such
to be an exam team leader, to give and grade all the tests. But, when
I'm on the air, I operate EXCLUSIVELY in the Technician Class bands, as
I enjoy them!! And, with operating "internet radio" (much to the angst
of the "purists", but I can't have antennas and RF gear where I'm at), I
can still be on the air daily, and talk to folks all over the place.

    Daryl, WX4QZ

You know it's very easy to get a license these days. The Technician license
is only 35 questions, no CW/Morse code, and you can study online for free.

If you're interested, let me or Daryl know. We can get you started in the right direction. :)

It's certainly worth considering! Antenna might get a bit tricky here in an apartment complex; have to check and see...

That's the good thing about those tests: you have a 25% chance of getting the question right even if you just guess. :D

There are ways around that, if you have repeaters nearby...
