    Your chat transcript

Lucky Mobile : Welcome to chat. Let’s connect you with a live agent. To start, could you tell us your name?

    You : August.

Joel : Thank you for reaching Lucky Mobile chat support and this is Joel, May I have your full name and mobile number please?

    You : I topped-up with $5 for 200MB at 3G. But I am NOT getting 3G! fullname=August Abolins. phone#=613-###-####

Joel : Thank you for the information. Let me pull up the account real quick.

Joel : May I have your full name please?

    You : august abolins

Joel : May I have your 4 digit account pin code as well for validation?

    You : i don't think i've used that. perhaps ####

Joel : May I have your account number, bill date and your date of birth for account validation instead?

Joel : Are you still there?

You : where is the acc# ? I am logged in but I don't see it.

You : bill date = 3rd or 4th of month.

Joel : It is usually on the home page top left side.

    You : dob= jun # ##

You : i only see 613####### which is the same as phone number.

Joel : How many GB of data do you have on the plan?

You : a total of 5GB with the bonus

    Joel : That's perfect.

Joel : Have you tried to restart the device and check if this resolves the issue?

You : yes. after I purchased the 200MB, I turned the phone right off for a while and then ON. I could get an internet connection, but the speed was NOT 3G.

Joel : Is it a bit slow?

You : even before that, I wasn't getting any internet at all.

You : I am only getting less than 56Kbps according to fast.com right now.

You : yesterday it was only 36Kbps all day.

Joel : Can you turn off the device for 1 minute right now and turn it on again after 1 minute?

    You : ok

    Joel : Thank you.

You : i am turning it on now.

    Joel : Sure thing.

You : now there is no internet at all!

You : one moment.. airplane mode was on.

    You : fast.com is reporting 76Kbps

Joel : Thank you for the information.

Joel : Is there any device connected?

You : no. it's just the phone.

Joel : What is your usual speed?

You : I would normally see up to 3Mbps

Joel : Have you tried removing the sim card and inserting it again?

    Joel : What happened?

You : removing and inserting card? that's silly. top-up or service pass updates don't seem to be working properly. I have wasted $5 for nothing for these last 3 days. I never achieved normal speeds during that time. I will try the card removal/insert. But I think I would prefer a $5 refund for this wasted purchase.

Joel : We will have the credit of $5 as exception but this will be on your next bill date. Is this fine?

You : i have reinserted SIM. booting up..

    Joel : Not a problem.

Joel : Are you still there?

You : please refund. fast.com is still crawling. only 57Kbps now.

You : does my normal billing kick in at midnight tonight? ..or is it until the 4th?

Joel : It will be at midnight.

Joel : we will just credit the $5.

You : the service-pass system is a failure. when i purchased one a few days ago, I still had about 200MB available on my account - but at that time I was not even getting an IP address. After I purchased the service-pass, and turning off the phone and back on again, an IP was served, but the speed was never 3G.

Joel : I am really sorry that the speed was not met as you expected but just to make sure, Is there anything else I can gladly help you today?

You : no - obviously. thank you and goodbye.

Joel : Thank you for chatting with Lucky mobile chat support. Kindly close the chat window to end our conversation please.

I never thought of the name that way before. Perhaps you are
    right.

I only discovered Luckymobile from someone locally who was using
mobile services the same way I do - primarily for data. I was
paying $35/mo with Rogers, getting 5GB (on a grand-fathered plan)
on 2G at the time - using the Rogers Stick (a USB radio). So..
$40 for a boost to 3G + plus calls, seemed pretty good.

The phone service is pretty good though, totally unlimited calls
+ texting within Canada, starting at the $25/mo entry point.
Higher monthly plans are just to boost data. I've only ever
called 3 or 4 numbers at most in the 2 yrs I've had it. Most of
the time it is just to myself to check messages at my shop, or to
    test my landlines.

$25/month is excellent for the talk & text! I live in the states. We don't see prices like that here. My wife pays $140 for 3 lines with Tmobile, and we're able to use 1 of the lines in Canada (we visit there sometimes) without roaming.

But customer support is important. If they leave you hanging because they
don't care, that's got to be part of the explanation for the low rates.

Aside from that one mishap, have they been good to you otherwise?

    Take a look at https://www.freedompop.com/plans

It looks like the same operating model as luckymobile (owned by
    Bell)

We also have Chatr (owned by Rogers) and Public (owned by Telus)

All three have similar websites with similar options to use your
existing the phone and just buying their SIM card to get started.

I really liked just buying a SIM card for $10 to get started to
try it in the Blackberry Q10 - and activate the service all by
myself. I started with even a lower plan - just to test how the
phone would work in my rural/remote location.

But customer support is important. If they leave you hanging because they don't care, that's got to be part of the explanation for the low rates.

Most of the time luckymobile is fine. I've never had a phonecall
issue (but then, I have only used the phone service to call
myself most of the time - I've only called 3 other people, max)
I text to one person I can trust, and that's about it. I only
had issues with their "service-pass" option to top-up and
continue with full speed mobile data. That system is just
broken. Instead, I just monitor my useage and try to never reach
the quota too soon. I can wait a few days for the next billing
cycle to kick in; then the full speed returns immediately.

I've been frustrated when I was unable to reach a human in
customer support after a certain time in the evening or on the
weekend to resolve the mobile data throttling issue the first
    time it happened.

Aside from that one mishap, have they been good to you otherwise?

Correct. I've always had my service-pass payments refunded.

I certainly don't exploit all the free calling features at all.
Call forwarding is pretty cool if I wanted to redirect the
cellnumber to someone else's phone, for example. I can hide my
phone number. All those features are selectable right on the BB
Q10 and do not require special call-ins to enable and disable.

Maybe freedompop can work for you!

I saw $25, but picked the 4 GB sample.

In your case the data is irrelevant, so the $17 & 1GB plan is most excellent.

I like that. It's great to not have to worry about compatibility when switching devices.

The sites have places where you can enter your device code to check for compatibility. For me, the 10 year old BlackBerry passed the test. The Q10 model supports a wack of technologies. I would assume that a more recent phone no matter what make will pass.

There's always a catch I guess. But a reliable phone for $17/month is still worth it for people who don't need data so much.

For just voice call reliability, you really don't need to talk to Support. It will depend on the towers anyway.

Thanks for lettting me know about it. My wife calls the shots with the phone bill though, and I told her about this, but she's hooked on Tmobile culture.

Maybe just try it for one month ($17 + the cost of the SIM card) You are not locked in. If there is a problem, just consider that an inexpensive self-serve experiment.

OH... I did have little issue signing up on my own. I was allowed to pick from a few available numbers. I really liked one very much. But the sign-up did not complete properly. I called Support, reached someone (it was still a standard work day and office hours) and the registration was done manually - BUT.. I was not able to get the number I had picked on the site.

The replacement number turned out to be pretty cool in its own way.

It wasn't even a week into my experiment that I decided that I will stick with them. The data service my primary concern. The phone + mobile data solution simply worked much better than my previous USB mobile-dongle device.

I should've said it "was" mine... haven't had the blackberry for a long time now.

I forget the model but the one with the trackball was the most reliable model. Never let anyone convince you that all Blackberry's are reliable though. The one with the side dial thing and horrible keyboard or the finger-swipe sensor were total unreliable pieces of shit. We had to replace at least seven or
eight of them at my workplace. Dropped calls, hot batteries, dead screens. Ahhhh fun times.

Like you said - the trackball stops working. So then I bought a regular full-size blackberry for like $200 on Craigslist, and now it's in the attic next to my other useless junk.

Yes.. I find it's a very nice size for a phone. The larger

There are two competing 3G technologies. Maybe the 3G you needed

Anyway.. the BB has manual or automatic selectable "LTE & 4G/3G &

I bought a genuine BB belt holster for it from eBay only last

..and I can believe it. The best I am getting right now is
barely 2.7Mbps. That's just in the low 3G range! ..and the
phone is telling me it is connected with LTE. But it is much
better than the HSPA+ that I was getting with a previous USB
    dongle for mobile.

Like you said - the trackball stops working. So then I bought a regular full-size blackberry for like $200 on Craigslist, and now it's in the attic next to my other useless junk.

Lol don't get me started on junk. I have a box full of old phones... going
back to Motorola and a nice blue Ericcson with the original big battery upgrade. Looks more like a cordless phone. That was my phone of 2001, 2002
I think. It was okay for this new fad called "text messaging".

When I moved to my current apartment about a year and a half ago there was at least 5 or 6 boxes of tech junk that ended up going to the curb. I refuse to go through that Kijiji and craigslist BS ever again.

For encrypted voice comms, I've heard that Signal is a good
choice. Telegram also boasts secure calls:

That could come in handy some day, but it would be a hassle to make all calls that way. I have a nosy neighbor and sometimes I wonder if she's using a scanner to listen to my phonecalls. But I don't have too much to hide, so it's all good.

I can't remember which technology advancement made me need to toss th Blackberry. This was back around 2011. But aparently I can still use on oldschool carriers :)

What model of the BB was it? I'm curious. If it only supported

It was a Blackberry Bold, but I'm not sure of the model number. I tried to dig it out of my box of electronic junk, but it was too cold and dark in the attic for me today :)

either 2G or HSPA+ max, then it is not worth it - even the range

That sounds familiar - I think my Blackberry was 2G, and then 3G became a thing. I think the phone was still useable, but Tmobile said "Your phone is
out of date" (something about security) and they persuaded me to upgrade to an Android.

Even my BB's LTE may not be all that it seems, according to this article:

All those categories (2G, 3G, EDGE, LTE) seems to be a lot of jargon. I see what you mean - you might have a phone capable of a better data speed, but
your network can hold you back especially if you're out of network when testing.

I wouldn't expect much from low budget carriers when even the big boys (Verizon, Tmobile, etc) are being stingy with data speeds.

I too will never do Craigslist again! Last time I used it was 3 years ago. I was selling my gas range, and some guy called and said he was going to come
to see it. But before he arrived, some lady came and bought it. I called him an told him "I just sold it. Sorry!"

Then the dude, a PSYCHO who looked just like Bernard Robichaud (Canadian
actor) showed up at my door demanding that I reimburse him for a truck he supposedly rented to buy my gas range. I told him nicely to beat it and he
said "Karma's gonna get you for this!"

So I'm permanently creeped out by Craigslist. Just the word "Craigslist" makes me check my locks :)

Oh stop! Lol... I always take the first $$$ that shows up at my house. I wouldn't be too freaked out by it but... I always give out my neighbors address until the person is HERE... then I say oops and open my door. Maybe this is a smarter idea in the future.

Its not great to be driving somewhere and have something sold that you wanted, but you didn't 'do anything wrong'. If that person 'does something wrong' and causes any issues for you, shoot them in the body-mass.

The guy didn't say he was coming to buy it, he said he was coming to look at it, which is typical.

Who rents a truck ahead of time to haul away something that they haven't even seen or paid for yet?

First come first served should be inferred when buying something on Craigslist.

Ah.. that is a very good distinction.

Who rents a truck ahead of time to haul away something that they haven't even seen or paid for yet?

Yeah.. that part would be suspect of a lie coming from that dude.
Unless.. he had other potentials lined up to look at that day or
the next few days. So.. it could still be feasible to do what he
did (rent a truck), but the jerk tried to make you feel guilty.

    I concur.

I appreciate what you were saying too though. I didn't feel good about costing the guy money (if that really did happen) but he was at my doorstep demanding me to pay him like $40 for a mistake that I felt he had made and that's insane.

I wish the guy the best though. Especially if it really was Bernard Robichaud!

Wait... the guy showed up at your house, asking for money for HIS rental?

I'm sorry, but I would cease being any kind of 'nice' to that guy. Its craigslist, dummy. [not you, him]

Yea! He was definitely a psycho and possibly an idiot, but most likely just walking around with big ones thinking he was gonna hustle me cuz I was so apologetic on the phone. (Mercy is for the weak!)
