Hello Y'all,

Is it possible to configure a cellphone to operate as a local
router and not have to rely on the cell carrier for
interconnectivity?

I don't need the internet for this. I just want a way to
interconnect my two laptops and my Blackberry (BB) so that I can
exchange some files. All I need is for the BB to function as a
switch.

Bluetooth (BT) is not an option, since one of the laptops (my
T60 XP)has a non-functioning BT radio.

Ideally, I'd like to find a way to get files from the T60 XP to
and from the BB directly. A wired USB connection is not
feasible - the BB has a broken USB port.

I am experimenting with BT transfer from the other laptop with
the functioning BT to my BB. But transfer speed for a typical
120MB file is 200KB/sec == 15 minutes! :( Is that normal for
BT?

I could archive the original file down to 30MB (and add
encryption as a side-benefit), but that's an extra step I'd
rather avoid at this time.

The BB has a Thethering function, but it seems to be designed
for linking up another device (either by USB or BT) to the
phone's cell carrier.

I suppose I could rig up an used ancient wifi router and operate
that for this purpose.

yes, if it can hotspot to another wireless connection but if you're going to do that, just connect them all to the wireless connection without the hotspot...

that for this purpose.

that's the easiest and it doesn't have to be that ancient, either... as long as it supported the wireless protocols needed by each of your devices it should be OK...

yes, if it can hotspot to another wireless connection but if you're going to do that, just connect them all to the wireless connection without the hotspot...

I'd love to do that as it seems to be the logical thing that
ought to work. But just enabling the wifi doesn't put the phone
in router mode. Instead, it seems to be waiting for the
"gateway" to respond, and that "gateway" is the cell service.
