• YT downloader - suggestions?

From August Abolins@2:221/1.58 to All on Tue Apr 28 22:59:00 2020

Can anyone recommend a good YouTube video dowloader plugin (I guess they
call them extensions now) for FireFox that doesn't want everything you
    own?

I mean.. a quick search for a downloader plugin produces several popular
    ones come highly "Recommended".

But some of those announce that they need access to all your browser
    history, mail contacts, cookies, etc.

Isn't there a good one that just gets the download done and leaves you
    alone?

no... why when there are tools like youtube-dl and similar that are available standalone?

On the PC I use youtube browser for smplayer

I stay away from youtube on the browser.

I use 4K Video Downloader. It's a GUI app, not a plugin. Works great.

I am impressed with the landing page https://youtube-dl.org/, and the Documentation/user-help page. Very good description of usage with some examples.

I'm not particularly excited in operating in command-mode while I'm residing in a GUI like the YT page, but program looks like a good no nonsense no tracking no
    ads experience.

Thanks for the heads-up on that one.

youtube-dl works really well on my XP pc.

BTW.. The -F option is very handy, but it doesn't seem to report the
actual filesize of the available files. :(

Were you getting anything better than 128Kbps in quality?

Prior to joining Spotify, I extracted the audio from the YT videos I was interested in carrying around with me or for producing an mp3/cd for the
car. The audio sound always seemed subpar.

The variety of --options for youtube-dl are absolutely amazing and well thought out. I can see the convenience of pulling in a playlist based on date criteria to get get just the videos one has missed, for example.

yeah, i believe so... i forget the option i used but i found it after several attempts...

BTW: can you adjust your quoting thing so that there's a space after the initials and greater than sign? see above, where the quoted text is flush up against the symbol... i've been manually adding the spaces but it is getting a bit meh...

Hmmm.. The missing space does seem unusual. I'll have to take another
look at the original when I get back to my openxp system.

Meanwhile.. Maybe you can use the tool referenced in my sig line. It does an amazing job "cleaning up" scattered quoted lines. It does the nice indentations
and extra .gt. signs where necessary.

in software that allows one to define the quote format, it is generally caused by forgetting the trailing space...

it cannot work in a linux command line ssh or telnet terminal, though ;)

I hadn't changed anything for months. I don't know why (or when) the
space disappeared in my replies. The quote function is re-entered now
with a fresh space after the symbol. It looks like this reply is cooperating.

Thanks for the heads-up on the matter.

I thought Linux people could operate auxiliary programs in a VM (like in
the good old OS2-Win days) and copy paste between apps.

we can but why? i'm reading a message; i hit the reply button; i select the lines i want to quote, hit enter, and then i'm in my editor to write my reply... i'm doing this all online to my BBS... why would i want to do all that
copying and pasting back and forth?

if i'm reading using my point setup with golded, same thing... why do all that when i have the tools at hand already? ;)

I hear ya. I'd love to see similar built-in capability when replying to messages when using Thunderbird. Fidolook for OutlookExpress was
    amazing.

OpenXP does a pretty good job with messages that arrive via true FTN. But there are issues with some othernets that I am curently exploring that
arrive via nntp using OpenXP. For those, it looks like Thunderbird will
be the only way to go; I would only use the Reformator/Quoter to retain a Fidostyle quote for a larger section of the message.

But, with the threading capabilities these days, I am considering not
quoting much at all. It is just as easy to hit the necessary "control" to navigate through a thread:

    ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
º When reference links available º
    º (Maus, Fido): º
    º º
º + Go to the next message in the º
º reference link (if any) º
    º º
º - Go to the original message in the reference º
º link (as long as it's still in the º
    º messagebase). º
    º º
    º Cursor-Left and Cursor-Right Toggles between º
º messages in the same reference link. º

The more systems would be conscious of using msgids/threading, then
quoting wouldn't be needed much at all.

    nope...

    nope...

it was a readability ""problem"" (aka visual asthetics)... having the space makes it a lot easier to read the actual quoted text instead of having to mentally separate it from the lead-in quote attribution portion when it is all mashed together...
