For you die hard Linux users, have a question. When running a mailer and/or bbs system, do you prefer pure text based systems or do like GUI versions?

Also do prefer to run just a DOS based system or native Linux system?

Text based is all that is needed for BBSing.

Also do prefer to run just a DOS based system or native Linux
    system?

    Native Linux all the way.

    Hello Dale,

    GUI versions?

Text based is what is needed. My BBS runs on a server where there is no xorg or
the like installed so in that situation text based is essential.

A GUI is not a bad thing also. If there was a GUI I would run that too, where I
    can.

Also do prefer to run just a DOS based system or native Linux system?

Linux native. There are things like dosemu that can be used to run DOS based software but it's full of stuff that works kinda/sorta/mostly.

Text based is fine. A GUI would be interesting also, but not
    really required.

    system?

    Native Linux.

Text for me, I don't use a GUI on servers normally.

I'm running native Linux (Synchronet and binkd).

    GUI versions??
Most Linux servers have no screen attached, what good would a GUI be, and why on earth would anybody want that?

So the answers is command line only, naturally!

i'm not a die hard linux user/fan but i am all linux now since my OS/2 system died...

i currently run all native linux software except for using dosemu for some 16bit dos doors... there is no gui on the bbs system at all so everything is text mode... the bbs system's OS install is a bare ubuntu server so there's not
even apache, php, or a sql database in the way... i'm running synchronet bbs with its javascript binkit mailer and tickit file tosser... messages are handled by sbbs' native sbbsecho tosser... i do sometimes run binkd instead of binkit as my mailer... pretty much everything running here, bbs-wise, is compiled here...

Like native. Run what you brung!
Synchronet has Text, Ansi, and GTK. I tend to go to the Ansi. The text does not
have as many options. But I mostly run everything from the console.

Native Linux no GUI unless application is interactive such as a set up program may be.

Must offer x64 operations for maximum system performance but some users may well require 32 bit.

That would depend on which, one is more comfortable using. I have used both. 90% of the PC's here are Linux based 6-GUI and 2-NonGUI.

Also do prefer to run just a DOS based system or native Linux system?

    I guess I don't see the point of running a non-native Linux BBS/Mailer software
    on a Linux system.
