• Playing sound samples in Wikipedia

From bob prohaska@3:770/3 to All on Tue Feb 2 00:07:30 2021
When trying to play the sample sounds at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C_(musical_note)#Middle_C
    the effort fails with

    Codec not supported:
VLC could not decode the format "MIDI" (MIDI Audio)

Is it possible to fix this? I've never tinkered with
sound on the Pi apart from playing YouTube videos and
haven't a clue where to start.

This is on a Pi 4 running
    Linux raspberrypi 5.4.83-v7l+ #1379 SMP Mon Dec 14 13:11:54 GMT 2020
    armv7l GNU/Linux

    Midi is not sound.
It is just a instruction to use instrument x with note y.
    Each midi player sounds different.

Download midi file and get some kind of midi player.
You will have to find something called "soundfont".
This is a database with sampled instruments.
Or connect it with sythesizer to use it as midi
    player.

    *can* being the operative word...

needs a few bits and bobs and the right version

Seemingly no, the key was "fluidsynth", apt did the rest.

    Thanks to all!
