If you need to change any sbbsecho message, maybe it is better to put it inside sbbsecho.ini and not depend and load another configuration file.

That's how it works for the mail server (the "NewMailNotice" key in the [mail] section of sbbs.ini) - but here are the reasons I'd consider using the text.dat instead:
    - the .ini syntax is different enough from the text.dat to be a challenge
    - the other/similar strings are already in the text.dat
    - the mail server already loads the text.dat (though it doesn't directly use its strings, they're available for use in JS external mail processors)

And having SBBSecho read/use the text.dat would actually be a pretty trivial change. But yes, the user-visible strings in SBBSecho should be configurable... somewhere.

I agree with you 100% there DM. Every text string with colours should be configurable in case a Sysop might want to use his own colour theme system instead of the default ones.

Make backups. When you do screw-up, compare the previous working backup with your newly screwed-up one and either the problem will be obvious or paste the diff between those 2 versions here and we can help. Use utilities like "diff" or "fc" to compare the files.

    http://synchro.net/docs/customization.html#MenusAndTextFiles

One gotcha is a string that spans multiple lines needs backslashes for continuation, for example:
    "\r\nBulk Upload %s %s Directory\r\n"\ 265 BulkUpload
"(Enter '-' for description to skip file):\r\n"

See that backslash following the closing-quote on the first line of that string? That's important.

    http://synchro.net/docs/customization.html#MenusAndTextFiles

One gotcha is a string that spans multiple lines needs backslashes for continuation, for example:
    "\r\nBulk Upload %s %s Directory\r\n"\ 265 BulkUpload
"(Enter '-' for description to skip file):\r\n"

See that backslash following the closing-quote on the first line of that string? That's important.

    Yes.

    Does the bbs get confused?

The only confusion is when the Ctrl-A code is a number (for background colors), in which case you must use \x01 instead of \1.

In some places, the text.dat file has things like "\1y%s\1c to" instead. Which is correct?

If you want to customize the output from logonlist.js, you do that via modopts.ini changes (not text.dat) - like I said above. https://wiki.synchro.net/module:logonlist#configure

That's what those numbers are for. That's something recent you
did because I never saw that before in modopts.

Well yeah... modopts.ini changes occasionally, just like most
    everything else.

You obviously read this message area - you don't read the actual
messages that describe all the various changes? Keep up!

If the text.dat was a textdat.js file then there would less screw ups in my own opinion that is.

blaming the data file for the error placed there by a human?

Isn't a .js file typically JavaScript? Wouldn't that just place MORE syntax restictions/requirements to the file?

The text.dat file has a specific format that is quite simple, and if you pull all the color codes out of it, it's actually quite legible.

So.. which might you consider to be more prone to screw ups: Editing text.dat or trying to create new menus and screens using Ctrl-A color codes and @ variables? I tend to do heavy editing in the menu, if there is an error it's less likely to take the system down like a corrupt text.dat might do.

But I get it... text.dat colors, if they don't match the color theme you desire, will require some editing.

... Everything beautiful has its moment and then passes away.

But it’s not the editing that is screwing up, It’s when it executes the bbs. My text.dat is a very basic coding process similar to the dos bbs days. Color where needed in the file, but that’s about it actually.

It's because you're using an editor not meant for data file editing on
an iPad. It's not the fault of the text.dat file.

In fact at least once, I created a testdat.js file *FOR* you, and stated
how you could use that to replace strings for use on your BBS instead of continuing to edit the text.dat file... you blew it off at the time, and
it's like a year later, and you still complain.

At this point, you are the problem and you don't really want a solution.

Getting up to 855 lines now. 900 soon perhaps?

Good to know someone is paying attention.
How many lines would you like to see in there?

I don't think there's a good reason to have a limit. I think customizability is a good thing. The more lines in text.dat, the more customizable Synchronet is.

So why did you previously state that you think there should be 1000 lines max?

I see. I predict it won't get to 1000. Not any reasons that I can see for
it to go much higher than it is.
