Ransomware is usually installed via known vulnerabilities in system software (e.g. operating systems). I don't think SBBS is a big enough target (not a large enough installed base) to attract such evildoers, but that doesn't mean it's impossible. It's much more likely that any Ransomware would be installed via some other well-known vulnerability in the system hosting the BBS.

It happends to corps with million dollar infosec bugets, it can happen to a bbs ;)

Make encrypted backups (7zip + aes/256 perhaps?) and ship them to the cloud. Onedrive is a good option as they have a personal vault that keeps access closed until you MFA in. I'm sure *nix has even better automated options.

I haven't experienced or heard about any BBSes falling victim to this. Sadly, ransomware is a business in 2o21 and I don't think - these actors go after huge money. A recent ask was for 60M... another for 20M a week or two ago. I don't think these groups care about 100 people enjoying their old tech - but sure, it COULD happen... if someone wanted to badly enough. I also agree with Digital Man that if it did, its more likely the actors would go after the entire system or network that was hosting the BBS server.

As much as I don't want to - I disagree. Theres several different ransomware scenerios. And one could certainly hem up a BBS server. I mean - easily. I don't think it would happen, but... I bet you could learn enough to hem 2o up.

You disagree that you could learn enough via Google to understand if or
how ransomware might affect a BBS?

Just for fun, I can think of a couple of scenarios where ransomware
COULD be successful on a BBS.

    * User uploads infected executable and sysop runs it.

    * BBS or door has a backdoor that allows user to upload and run infected executable.

    * BBS has a buffer overflow vulnerability in one of its services that
    allow upload and execution.

Basically, the same issues that affect any software connected to the
    Internet.

The only "talking points" you create are people either trying to figure out what the hell you're posting about, or just plain telling you how shit you are at posting.

You need to up your game a bit. You'd get far more interaction and far more intelligent conversation if you just put a little thought into your posts.

Try this to start: When you write something, go back and re-read it. Pretend you're someone else who doesn't have any information about what you're writing about.

Then clarify your statements. add context.

    Alternatively, just stop posting.

No, I'm pretty sure I never said that.

I'm pretty patient with you but "like" might be too strong a word. :-)

Yes. Yes, exactly that. Another way to say what Gamgee did is... write posts that are excellent to others.

I don't think asking Digital Man questions, so repeatedly that its... its insane that he hasn't twitted or banned you. The suggestions/questions are usually about the same thing - and often are so... amateur OR out there that they border on spam.

But.. I know - you'll keep posting multiple daily. Or you'll get butt-hurt and go away for a month... but I also know you'll be back. Posting daily rib-jabs to developers who are excellent to US.

And for some odd reason, are excellent to you, too. I'll continue going on passing over the posts. And you'll post them. Lol, Gamgee will yell - others will nicely prod you to be nice... and you'll keep pressing iPad buttons - I don't get it... but thats OK too.

Well as DM has said before, he can't twit or ban me for reasons
unknown and I respect him for that.

Well, he *COULD* do that, but for some reason, doesn't. I actually know
the reason, but I'll be nice and not say it.

I even got my name on the logonlist screenshot on
wiki.synchro.net as well. I also got credit for some ideas and
errors too. So DM must like me being here otherwise I would have disappeared by now.

Your last sentence there is a *CLASSIC* example of your postings. I can honestly tell you that in my entire lifetime I have not ever seen a
grown adult who possessed fewer clues than you do. I'm talking in all
forms of communication, written or verbal, private or public. It's
truly a source of never-ending amazement to me to see you keep extending
the known boundaries of how *NOT* to do things. I would say "Bravo!",
    but.... meh.

... Ignorance can be cured. Stupid is forever.

Listen - I've stuck up for you before when others weren't... having it.

You are incorrect that DM COULD ban/twit you tomorrow... what you don't [seem to] understand is that he WON'T - not because you are valuable or liked or.. god I hate speaking truths... theres many truths in my life where I'm the bad guy - but ... you'll be here tomorrow NOT because you're a good, valuable user and contributor - but because DM is a far better developer than I. :P

You'll be here tomorrow because thats how DM rolls. Open-source... even with all the twits.

You, sir, are a twit. And I am a twat for playing ball.... I'm outta here to play my C-128... I can't be bothered. I do laugh, tho... at .. that brain of yours.

I don't wanna be mean anymore. People deserve it - but ... I should be better.

Has anyone ever experienced this or can this ever happen to SBBS

It happends to corps with million dollar infosec bugets, it can
    happen to a bbs ;)

Make encrypted backups (7zip + aes/256 perhaps?) and ship them to
the cloud. Onedrive is a good option as they have a personal vault
that keeps access closed until you MFA in. I'm sure *nix has even
    better automated options.

NOTE: when systems are breached for ransomware, backups are often
corrupted as well... best to push to a resource, and have another
separate system pull backups, then sort/store by date-time.

By having a disconnected system pulling backups from a common source, corrupted archives will not break existing pulled archives on the
separate system. It also helps to do these things across providers.

    FWIW...

Basically, the same issues that affect any software connected to the Internet.

Given the ageing JS runtime Synchronet uses, it might be possible to go through older CVEs, looking at how sync and spidermonkey use input in
the telnet or services, it's entirely possible to come up with
something... but would in general be a lower value target, if such a
thing were done, would most likely be to target a particular someone,
    such as a self-proclaimed millionaire.
