• SBBS 3.18b upgrade problems

From Kurisu@1:103/705 to digital man on Mon Sep 21 09:48:38 2020
This morning I began the process of upgrading my bbs from 3.17b to 3.18b using the update zip package and its included instructions. I believe I followed them properly, however, upon reaching the end of all the steps and attempting to run the sbbs control panel, nothing happened - it appeared to attempt to run then silently fail.

I'm posting not so much to inqure about how to fix this, not at this time, but to try to resolve this on my end it may help to know under what likely condition SBBS would fail like that after an in place upgrade; I was selective with text files, as I wanted to retain as much of the current appearance as I could, so as to know things worked before I went about customizing everything again - perhaps I should just overwrite everything and see what happens, then carefully replace and re-edit things anyway?

In any case I'll try again later. Maybe it was a fluke.

For context my system is running Windows Server 2008.

What sbbs.exe, does that run (e.g. from a command prompt)?

Could be a lack of the required MSVC DLLs? Or who knows. Need some kind of error message to know more.

My apologies, to clarify I run the BBS by just running the SBBS control panel from C:\sbbs\exec\sbbsctrl.exe at start up - runs without a hitch on 3.17b but shows nothing on 3.18 - not in processes, no error message, nothing.

I will see what debugging I can do - error message hunting, what have you, and report back. Since the control seems to fail to load I don't have much to go on. As an aside, I have tried another download of the zip just to rule out corruption there. Again, though, I'll do some more testing and report back. _____

Right, I'm asking you to try running sbbs.exe instead of sbbsctrl.exe, from a command prompt, to see what is displayed and report back.

I doubt that'll make any difference (extracting the zip would have failed if there was corruption). The first debugging step would be to run sbbs.exe from a command prompt and report back what is displayed to you in the console.

Reporting back, absolutely nothing is displayed when running it from command prompt. The command window behaves as if it's processing something for all of about a quarter of a second at most then just goes back to idle state. It actually behaves similarly when running the jsexec update command, for what that is worth.

When you say "running it", is that running sbbs.exe (not sbbsctrl.exe) as I requested?

If jsexec.exe isn't displaying anything either, that really leads me to believe there's a fundamental issue. Like, you don't have the MSVC runtime library installed?

Yes, I do mean to say sbbs.exe via command line.

So I checked and found I had that library installed. That got me thinking and I noticed I had the 64 bit version installed. Why, who knows, I do goofy stuff like that. I removed it, downloaded and installed the x86 version and things began working.

That's all it was - the bloody runtime library version!

Thanks. Now to wrap my head around all the new stuff to enjoy in this build. :D _____
