• Switching from QWK to FTN

From Hatton@1:103/705 to All on Tue Oct 20 22:02:20 2020
When I set up my board I opted to join fsxNet and SciNet using the QWK gateway. Now that I've gained some experience in getting the board together there is a part of me wondering if I am missing out on anything by doing this.

This brings up two key questions:
    1) Am I truly missing out on anything? The main reason I opted to go QWK was because I don't have any of the network door games and don't plan on adding them.
    2) Is it possible to do an "in-place" conversion from QWK to FTN or would I delete the old message base(s) and then go through the FTN setup as if they never existed?

The reason I feel like I might be missing out is because the QWK members don't get access to the file bases nor do they appear on any of the activity stats posts. I don't know if either of those are "worth it".

    Thanks!
    Hatton

I don't know about sciNet, but fsxNet is definitely primarily an FTN-style network, so there's no real advantage to QWK on that network (other than ease of setup for you). I usually go with what's the "main stream" tech of the network.

NetMail. Maybe proper timezone information. File Echoes.

    2) Is it possible to do an "in-place" conversion from QWK to FTN or would I delete the old message base(s) and then go through the FTN setup as if they never existed?

I'd delete the existing msg bases and start over. You don't want to risk flooding the network with dupes (unlikely to happen, but best not chance it).

The reason I feel like I might be missing out is because the QWK members don't get access to the file bases nor do they appear on any of the activity stats posts. I don't know if either of those are "worth it".

<shrugs> It's hard to say. If you want the file echoes, then yeah, probably worth it. But you might switch and then decide it wasn't but there's no realy down-side to FTN for those networks, so you just stay on FTN.

Reminds me of a question I forgot to ask. So, if a board qwk's to vert and grabs pkts from your FTN subs and imports them ... then replies and .rep's back to you, will those messages show up with your FTN return-addr? I guess the question is, can boards use vert as an FTN/QWK gateway or would that violet a policy?

That would violate the policy of those FTN networks as Vertrauen is not an authorized gateway for them. But if I were, and you did, then yes, the messages from the QWK node would have Vertrauen's FTN origin line and addressing.
