Going to start a sub project to convert xbit bbs to linux on a dev VM. Any suggestions on what distro? I'm guessing it won't matter but seems like a
good first question before I get started.

    Thanks,

Not really. I am running slackware and find it works well. Also debian, Synchronet always worked fine for me.

As long as you are comfortable with your distro you'll be fine.

Probably not what you want to hear, but my suggestion would be to try out a bunch of distros and find one you like and want to stick with before taking the plunge. Any specific suggestions from others is only opinion on what they like best.

Questions that may point yourself in the right direction:

Do you care how bleeding edge said distro is? Do you want new features and security (rolling updates)?

Do you want to compile everything from scratch? Or would you prefer binary packages (faster)?

Do you want a GUI right from installation or not?

That might narrow down your list a little bit when you answer those questions. After that it would just be your own preference. Mind you, the list is still long even after those are answered, but then you can factor in which has better documentation/wiki and support, and whatever else tickles your fancy. ;)

    Regards,
    Nick

I agree. I think there is a reason that Ubuntu is the most popular with people who just want things to work. Most of the people who don't like it seem to be those who want to install only what they want.

I've been using Ubuntu iin the WSL on Win 10 the last few weeks, and I've been surprised how well that's worked. It's something to think of, especially as a dev envirionment. On Win10 HOME, I've even managed to get a ew Docker images running with various different envirionments..

I'm partial to Debian/Ubuntu myself, but ymmv there. Ubuntu
generally has the most wide reaching support available.

Just a thought, and if you'd like some help getting started...
If you install Docker and docker-compose, I can have you up
pretty quickly... would be happy to walk you through it.

If you're on facebook or twitter can DM and can help walk you
through it over skype or something. Should probably take
under 15m from the point of the VM install. For reference
I moved my setup to a different VM/Host a couple times and
    took under 10-15m each time.

    First, plese excuse typos
Second, I'm not comfortable enough with the Docker process to put anything *stable* or productionish out there yet. Getting there, but it's a process.
I think it has incredible potential though.
Also, the schandefreuder boner from MS actually having LINUX running almost natively is almost too much to bear. Those of us who were around for the beginnings of this thing of hours, it's such fun...

When installing WSL2, Windows' Desktop actually loads under Hyper-V
just like WSL, so it's as native as Windows at that point.

I do think there's a few points of integration that could stand a
little work. The magic port forwarding/mapping (almost everything
works from "localhost") is nice, but sometimes gets borked and then
you have to reboot. Also, would be nice if X and PulseAudio
integration was in the box, so running desktop apps was easier.

In general, couldn't be happier as a dev environment... actually,
if I could have gotten full VMs working in Linux on a bleeding
edge kernel in Linux without pain, that might have been slightly
more appealing to me, at the time needed the updated kernel for
hardware support, very new nic chipset(s).

It was interresting getting the cross platform (armv7, arm64)
builds working, which should make playing with an rpi infinitely
more easy to deal with (maybe m1 mac too). Had to wrap the dosemu
apt install separately so it wouldn't kill ARM builds where it's
    not available.
