• I'm new to Synchronet

From Mike Dippel@1:103/705 to All on Wed Nov 10 16:01:39 2021
Greetings all! I have been running Wildcat fr many years, and decided to give Synchronet a try. So far, I love it! Very easy to setup and run.

A few questions though. If I register a domain name, how can I run it on a local machine. I know I have to open a few ports to allow HTTP, etc. How do I handle DNS? Currently, I am able to log in from a separate computer using the IP address 192.168.0.23 but I want to use a domain name and join a few nets as well.

    Thanks,
    Mike Dippel

Make your domain's A record point to your local machine's public IP address: https://wiki.synchro.net/faq:tcpip#public_ip

I know I have to open a few ports to allow HTTP, etc. How
    do I handle DNS?

Your name provider (e.g. Godaddy or whatever) will allow you to configure the IP address to point it at (the A record). If you have a dynamic (changing) IP address, then you may need a name provider that supports a DynDNS protocol that your gateway/router also supports or you can run software to auto update it.

Currently, I am able to log in from a separate computer
using the IP address 192.168.0.23 but I want to use a domain name and join a few nets as well.

192.168.x.x is a private IP address and not useful outside of your private network:

Is the password defined in the Synchronet system? I tried a poll from my Irex (binkp)
program and got an error 'no such host is known'

I went onto the binkp.net site and got this response when trying to enter a new one:
Error: Node 954:895/35 missing in the nodelist.315

I compiled the new nodelist about 2 hours ago. Does this nodelist have to exist in my
    setup on the server somewhere?

Greetings all! I have been running Wildcat fr many years, and decided to give Synchronet a try. So far, I love it! Very easy to setup and run.

I am able to connect to the new domain hobby-bbs.com now.

Here is my latest response from AREAFIX:

    %+all

Even though I send my areafix from 954:895/35 to 954:895/1
it tries to callout to f1.n954.z954.example.com:24554 and fails with the error (no such
    host is known)

    I defined Linked Nodes as:
    Address: 954/895/35

    Binkp Settings as:
    Host: hobbylinebbs.com
    Port: 24554
    Poll to Yes
    Source Address: 954:895/1

    and to Domains
I added the name: hobbynet and zone as 954

I am getting areafix responses, but no mail, even after using the %+all in the message
    body.

    I appreciate your help.

Neither your question nor my answer mentioned any password. What are you talking about?

    host is known)

That indicates you don't have a hostname configured, so it's trying to use DNS (which isn't likely to work for any zones except FidoNet).

    I defined Linked Nodes as:
    Address: 954/895/35

Wait... isn't 954:895/35 *your* address? You shouldn't be adding *your* address as a linked node.

    Binkp Settings as:
    Host: hobbylinebbs.com

    hobbylinebbs.com is your zone 954 hub's address?

    Port: 24554
    Poll to Yes
    Source Address: 954:895/1

You likely shouldn't be setting the source address. And if you did set it, it would be one of *your* AKAs, not the remote address.

    and to Domains
I added the name: hobbynet and zone as 954

I am getting areafix responses, but no mail, even after using the %+all in the message

    I appreciate your help.

I'd appreciate you using separate message threads for different lines of questioning.
