    Mesoscale Discussion 2065
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
    1139 AM CST Mon Dec 27 2021

    Areas affected...portions of northern Minnesota

    Concerning...Heavy snow=20

    Valid 271739Z - 272145Z

SUMMARY...Occasional bouts of 1 inch/hr snowfall rates may occur
over the next few hours across far northeast Minnesota in
association with heavier snow bands. Across the rest of northern
Minnesota, blowing snow is the primary concern.

DISCUSSION...MRMS mosaic and KDLH dual-polarimetric radar imagery
currently shows a band of moderate to heavy snow occurring across
St. Louis/Lake County MN in association with strong 925 mb
frontogenesis immediately preceding the surface low moving towards
Ontario. In the near term (next couple of hours), this band is
expected to track northeast, further into Lake County and eventually
Cook County. Some of the latest METAR observations have shown 20-30
mph sustained westerly surface winds west of the surface low center,
and as the low ejects into Ontario, these winds are expected to
overlap regions of recently accumulated snow. Metars across far
eastern ND into western MN have recently depicted heavy snow despite
the absence of clearly discernible heavy snowbands in the area,
suggesting that blowing snow is already underway and is expected to
continue for at least the next few hours. Brief periods of very
limited visibility are possible where winds can sustain well over 20
mph, and where higher gusts occur.
