Mesoscale Discussion 0031
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
1006 AM CST Mon Jan 03 2022
Areas affected...Portions of the Mid-Atlantic
Concerning...Heavy snow=20
Valid 031606Z - 032100Z
SUMMARY...Heavy snow, with rates of 1-2 inches per hour, will
continue to shift east-northeastward this afternoon while gradually
diminishing from west to east.
DISCUSSION...A pronounced mid/upper-level cyclone centered over the
Carolinas and southern VA at 16Z will move quickly
east-northeastward through the afternoon and off the Atlantic Coast.
Strong low/mid-level frontogentic forcing on the north side of this
cyclone continues to support a band of moderate to heavy snow
extending from parts of north-central NC into VA/DC/MD/DE, and
southern NJ. Lift through the saturated dendritic growth zone,
current radar presentation of the snow band, and multiple surface
observations all suggest that heavy snowfall, with rates of 1-2
inches per hour, will likely continue as the band shifts slowly east-northeastward towards the coast through the afternoon. On the
southeast periphery of the heavy snow band, rain ongoing across
parts of southeastern VA should transition to mainly snow as the low
level thermal profile cools with continued low-level cold advection.
In tandem with the overall system motion, snow will gradually
diminish from west to east across the Mid-Atlantic over the next
several hours.
