  • HP Chrome CB1-014 OS

    Hello All!

    I'm in the market for a new, tiny computer. I'm looking for a small
    footprint, silent, and cool-running PC. I intend to run Cyberia on this same computer. I'd like to run some form of linux on it. I don't need much, just some robust cpu power and ram capacity, really. But I'm willing to trade cpu power for the quiet and cool running. This is intended to be run in my office/closet in my bedroom, and it can't make too much noise, or the wife
    will complain about it.

    One such item I've found is the HP Chrome at Frys: http://www.frys.com/product/8143815?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG

    I'm not familiar with this product; is it meant to just be a streaming device like a Roku? Or can it be a full-fledged computer like what I'm looking for?

    Is anybody familiar with this item?


    Next up is the Asus Chrombox-M004U. It almost sounds like the same kind of device:

    I'm sure this has been done before and I know you're expecting someone to suggest it, but have you considered a Raspberry Pi? As far as small computers that run linux go, it's the cheapest and smallest one that I can think of.

    I have a Raspberry Pi - I was running a x84 BBS on it, but was tired of dealing with home IP changes and config, etc RPi's do not have a lot of horsepower though, so it depends on what you want to run it. It can work though.

    Yes, I have considered it. And I have one :)

    Sadly, it is very underpowered and slow by comparison to my 4yo Acer desktop. One other thing I'm waiting on is for James to finish ramping up the development of Mystic for the Pi. But right now, I have Mystic running on my Pi, and it is a accessable as a door from my main BBS.

    The speed of the Pi is reminescent of runnig a BBS with a 1200 baud modem. Plus you cannot run any dos doors via dosemu. You can run a dos emulator, but it's only in X. Maybe that's why I create so many Mystic doorgames with MPL. That makes them run on any platform that Mystic runs on.
